Frank Morgan
(1890 - 1949)
Biography from Katz's Film Encyclopedia

Born Francis Phillip Wuppermann in New York City. One of 11 children of a prosperous manufacturer of Angostura bitters for cocktails, he worked at various odd jobs before following in the footsteps of his elder brother, actor Ralph Morgan (1882-1956), making his Broadway debut in 1914. Two years later he began playing leads in Vitagraph films produced in the New York area. For a decade he worked intermittently in films while pursuing his stage career, but in the early 30s he settled in Hollywood permanently and before long became a fixture in MGM films, specializing in amiable, befuddled, absent-minded, often roguish middle-aged types, occasionally in character leads but mostly in key supporting parts. He appeared in dozens of films, but is probably best remembered for the title role in THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939).
