Born in Hastings, Minnesota. Art director who entered American film with Harry Houdini's THE GRIM GAME (1919) at Famous Players-Lasky. In 1925, he worked at the Mary Pickford Co. on LITTLE ANNIE ROONEY and continued there with SPARROWS (1926) and THE GAUCHO (1927). He moved to Fox, where he received Oscar nominations for Frank Borzage's SEVENTH HEAVEN (1927) and STREET ANGEL (1928). Oliver's associate art director credits at UA and Metro include SCARFACE (1932), THE BAND PLAYS ON (1934), VANESSA: HER LOVE STORY and MARK OF THE VAMPIRE (both 1935), THE GOOD EARTH (1937) and OF HUMAN HEARTS (1938). He was art director for THE LUCKY STAR, THE RIVER and SUNNY SIDE UP (all 1929), CITY GIRL, SONG O' MY HEART, LILIOM and LIGHTNIN' (all 1930), MOVIE CRAZY (1932), TILLIE AND GUS (uncredited) and WHITE WOMAN (both 1933), VIVA VILLA! and THE CAT'S PAW (both 1934) and MAKE A WISH (1937).
