Charles Previn

Born in Brooklyn, NY; educated at Cornell University and New York College of Music. Previn worked as a musician and conductor in vaudeville and musical comedy and later became conductor of the St. Louis Municipal Opera. He was conductor on the NBC radio series Silken Strings from 1934 through 1936. In 1936, he became musical director, arranger, composer and conductor at Universal, where he remained until 1944 with over 225 films to his credit, including most of Deanna Durbin's popular hits. He started working at other studios in 1944, and he succeeded Erno Rapée as music director of Radio City Music Hall in 1945, a position he held until 1947. He returned to Hollywood and worked at Eagle-Lion and MGM before his retirement in 1953. During his time at Universal, he composed uncredited stock music for many of the studio's releases; he was credited as composer for many other Universal films.

Previn received an honorary doctorate from the Ithaca Conservatory of Music in 1947.
