Herman Rosse
(1887 - 1965)

The King of Jazz (1930)
Born in Amsterdam, Nethelands. Art director, costume designer and set designer at Universal in the early 1930s. As art director, his credit include THE KING OF JAZZ (also costume designer) and ORIENTE ES OCCIDENTE / EAST IS WEST (both 1930), STRICTLY DISHONORABLE (1931) and THE EMPEROR JONES (1933). Rosse was the uncredited set designer of DRACULA and FRANKENSTEIN (both 1931) and MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE (1932) -- films that identified the "look" of Universal horror features for years to come.

Rosse was head of the School of Design at the Chicago Art Institute. He designed the Tony Award medallion.
