Born Victor Salberg in Birmingham, England. He entered British films as a salesman in 1916, after being wounded in WWI action with the London Irish Rifles. He later became involved in filmmaking as a production manager and in 1920 joined Gaumont-British as a screenwriter. He directed his first film in 1927 and during the 30s directed or produced some of Britain's finest films of the period. He then went to Hollywood, where the films he directed for MGM and other studios seemed less inspired than his British output. Some of his notable directing credits include THE ARCADIANS (1927, also writer & producer), KITTY (1929), THE SPORT OF KINGS and HINDLE WAKES (also writer) (both 1931, both also producer), THE FAITHFUL HEART (1932, also writer), FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH and I WAS A SPY (both 1933), THE IRON DUKE, EVERGREEN and EVENSONG (all 1934), THE DICTATOR (1935), IT'S LOVE AGAIN (1936), DARK JOURNEY (1937, also producer), ACTION FOR SLANDER and SOUTH RIDING (both 1938, both also producer), FOREVER AND A DAY (1943, also producer), TONIGHT AND EVERY NIGHT (1945, also producer), THE GREEN YEARS (1946), GREEN DOLPHIN STREET and IF WINTER COMES (both 1947), CONSPIRATOR (1949), KIM (1950), CALLING BULLDOG DRUMMOND (1951), 24 HOURS OF A WOMAN'S LIFE (1952) and THE LONG WAIT and THE SILVER CHALICE (also producer) (both 1954).
Other producing credits include THE CITADEL (1938), GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS, (1939), BITTER SWEET (1940), DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, SMILIN' THROUGH and THE CHOCOLATE SOLDIER (all 1941), I, THE JURY (1953) and KISS ME DEADLY (1955, exec. producer). He had better success in America as a producer. In 1960 he returned to England, where he formed an independent production company but ended his long and fruitful career after producing but a pair of feature films, THE GREENGAGE SUMMER (1961) and MIX ME A PERSON (1962). Nominated for Best Picture 1938: THE CITADEL - Producer at MGM-UK
