Anne Shirley

Born Dawn Evelyeen Paris in New York City and in Hollywood films from age five as Dawn O'Day, she changed her name to Anne Shirley in 1934 when she was assigned the title part in ANNE OF GREEN GABLES (1934), and continued her screen career as an ingenue and later as a leading lady. Her first husband (1937-43) was actor John Payne. She retired in 1945, after marrying her second husband, producer Adrian Scott, one of the Hollywood Ten. Shortly after their 1949 divorce, she married screenwriter Charles Lederer; they remained married until his death in 1976.

Some of her notable credits as an adult include CAREER (1939), THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER (1941), FOUR JACKS AND A JILL and THE MAYOR OF 44TH STREET (both 1942), BOMBARDIER and GOVERNMENT GIRL (both 1943) and MUSIC IN MANHATTAN and MURDER, MY SWEET (a.k.a. FAREWELL MY LOVELY) (both 1944).
