Born in Philadelphia, PA. Entered American film as an assistant director for Allan Dwan's THE IRON MASK (1929) at the Elton Corporation. Other a.d. credits, although usually uncredited, include DAMES (1934), LITTLE BIT SHOT, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM and CAPTAIN BLOOD (all 1935), THE GREEN PASTURES (1936), FOUR DAUGHTERS and ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES (both 1938), DODGE CITY, THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX and FOUR WIVES (all 1939), ALL THIS, AND HEAVEN TOO and THE LETTER (both 1940), THE SEA WOLF and DIVE BOMBER (both 1941), and several other feature and television productions up through 1967. At Warner's, Shounds directed the short LETTER FROM A FRIEND (1943) with Alan Ladd, and the 50-minute drama THE BIG PUNCH (1948) featuring Wayne Morris and Gordon MacRae.
