Director (from 1914) and producer (from 1920) whose credits include (as director) WHY MEN LEAVE HOME (1924), IN OLD KENTUCKY (1927), BACK STREET (1932), ONLY YESTERDAY (1933), IMITATION OF LIFE (1934, also producer), MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION (1935, also producer), PARNELL (1937, also producer), LETTER OF INTRODUCTION (1939, also producer), WHEN TOMORROW COMES (1939, also producer), THE KEYS OF THE KINGDOM (1944), LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN (1945), THE FOXES OF HARROW and FOREVER AMBER (uncredited) (both 1947), THE WALLS OF JERICHO (1948) and FATHER WAS A FULLBACK and OH, YOU BEAUTIFUL DOLL (both 1949).

Stahl was one of the 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences.
