Born in Vienna, Austria. Entered British film as an uncredited composer for CATHERINE THE GREAT (1934) at London Film Productions. Alexader Korda used his compositions in THE PRIVATE LIFE OF DON JUAN (also 1934), and Toch worked again uncredited on LITTLE FRIEND (1934) at Gaumont. He came to the US in 1935 and scored Henry Hathaway's PETER IBBETSON at Paramount. He scored THE GENERAL DIED AT DAWN and MURDER WITH PICTURES (both 1936) and OUTCAST and ON SUCH A NIGHT (both 1937) at Paramount, then moved to 20th Century-Fox. Notable credits at Fox (largely uncredited) include HEIDI (1937), SUEZ and THE REBEL SON (both 1938), THE THREE MUSKETEERS, THE RETURN OF THE CISCO KID and THE STORY OF ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL (all 1939). Then it was back to Paramount for THE CAT AND THE CANARY (1939), THE GHOST BREAKERS and DR. CYCLOPS (both 1940), then over to Columbia for LADIES IN RETIREMENT (1941), André de Toth's NONE SHALL ESCAPE and William Cameron Menzies' ADDRESS UNKNOWN (both 1944). His only other credited film after that is THE UNSEEN (1945) back at Paramount. His stock music was used in several films by all the studios where he worked.
