Born in New York City. Director, assistant director and 2nd unit director who entered American film as a.d. for THE SHADOW OF A DOUBT (1916) at Equitable Motion Pictures. He was a.d. for three more films before he began to direct in 1926. His first film as director was the Jack Holt western BORN TO THE WEST at Famous Players-Lasky. He directed 10 more westerns in the silent era, the last of which was SIOUX BLOOD for MGM starring Tim McCoy. He only directed two other films: the short subject DONKEY BASEBALL (1935) and the Wallace Beery feature THE MIGHTY McGURK (1946), both at Metro.
The rest of his career at Metro was as a.d. or 2nd unit director, usually uncredited. Some of his notable films are JUST A GIGOLO (1931), ARSÈNE LUPIN and THE MASK OF FU MANCHU (both 1932), THE BARBARIAN (1933), VIVA VILLA! (1934), DAVID COPPERFIELD and MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (both 1935), NINOTCHKA (1939), BOOM TOWN (1940). After WW II, he was 2nd unit director for THE FIGHTING O'FLYNN (1949), THE NEXT VOICE YOU HEAR... (1950), THE DESPERATE HOURS (1955), THE DEEP SIX (1958) and THE BIG COUNTRY (1958).
