Born in New York City. Screenwriter and director who entered American film as a writer at Vitagraph (SUSIE, THE SLEUTH - 1916). He wrote five more screenplays for silent films, but his primary job was as director. He directed 36 silent films, beginning with ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS (1918, Vitagraph), and one talkie: LUCKY IN LOVE (1929, Pathé). He wrote the play The Gay Divorcée and adapted it to a musical for the screen and composed the score with Samuel Hoffenstein (1934). The film produced the first Best Song Oscar winner, Con Conrad's & Herb Magdison's "The Continental."
