He entered films at 16 as camera assistant, and after many years in various capacities, including assistant director and associate producer, he began directing action-oriented films in the mid-40s. From time to time he served as second-unit director on large-scale productions requiring action expertise, including CAPTAIN FROM CASTILE (1947), PRINCE OF FOXES (1949), CAPTAIN NEWMAN, M.D., A GATHERING OF EAGLES (both 1963), THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY (1965) and ASSAULT ON A QUEEN (1966).
Some of Webb's feature directing credits include THE CARIBBEAN MYSTERY and THE SPIDER (both 1945), THE GLORY BRIGADE and BENEATH THE 12-MILE REEF (both 1953), WHITE FEATHER and SEVEN CITIES OF GOLD (also producer) (both 1955), ON THE THRESHOLD OF SPACE, THE PROUD ONES and Elvis' film debut LOVE ME TENDER (all 1956), THE WAY TO THE GOLD (1957), GUNS OF THE TIMBERLAND (1959), PIRATES OF TORTUGA and THE SEVEN WOMEN FROM HELL (both 1961), THE JACKALS and THE CAPE TOWN AFFAIR (both 1967, both also producer) and A LITTLE OF WHAT YOU FANCY (1968).
