Film editor and director who entered American film as one of the editors of J. J. Cohn & Fred Niblo's BEN-HUR (1925) at MGM. Other editing credits in a career that spanned over 50 years include IN OLD KENTUCKY (1927), MIN AND BILL (1930), FREAKS (1932, uncredited), GABRIEL OVER THE WHITE HOUSE (1933), HIDE-OUT (1934), SHADOW OF DOUBT and WHIPSAY (both 1935) and THE GOOD EARTH (1937). Wrangell began directing short subjects 1938 with John Nesbitt's PASSING PARADE, the "Joe Doakes" series with Robert Benchley, and other dramatic and comedy shorts. His first feature directing assignment was PHILO VANCE'S GAMBLE (1947). He also directed HEARTACHES (also 1947) and the 2-hour Cinemrama documentary, SOUTH SEAS ADVENTURE (1958).
In 1950, Wrangell returned to the cutting room for LOVE HAPPY (1950) and TOBOR THE GREAT (1954). He started editing for television with the 1957 series "Maverick." Other TV credits include "The Nine Lives of Elfego Baca" (1958, Disney), "Adventure in Paradise" (1959), "Combat!" (1962) and "I Spy" (1965). His final feature editing credits are NO MAN IS AN ISLAND (1962), A YANK IN VIET-NAM (1964) and ONLY WAY TO SPY (1978). Nominated for Film Editing 1937: THE GOOD EARTH 1 nomination |
