Born in London, England; raised and educated in the US. She played leads on Broadway from her teens and gradually moved into character roles, notable in Tobacco Road (1933). From 1929 she also played character parts in many films, often portraying devoted mothers. Some of her notable credits include her first film THE FIGHT (1915, at age 34), SERGEANT YORK (1941), HANGMEN ALSO DIE (1943), EXPERIMENT PERILOUS (1944), JOHNNY ANGEL (1945), THE YEARLING (1946), FOREVER AMBER (1947), THE LOVES OF CARMEN (1948) and WHITE HEAT (1949).
