Born Dorothy Isobel Cox in London, England. A distinguished leading lady of the British stage, she was signed by Hollywood in 1932 following a triumphant Broadway apperance opposite Basil Rathbone in The Devil Passes. She brought charm, grace, and reserved good looks to several American films of the early 30s, notably Noël Coward's CAVALCADE (1933). She then returned to England and to her stage career, subsequently appearing only occasionally in films.
Her brief filmography includes her first film, RASPUTIN AND THE EMPRESS (1932), MEN MUST FIGHT and REUNION IN VIENNA (both 1933), WHERE SINNERS MEET, LET'S TRY AGAIN and ONE MORE RIVER (all 1934), ON THE NIGHT OF THE FIRE (1939), GASLIGHT (1940), FREEDOM RADIO, THE PRIME MINISTER and KIPPS (all 1941), AN IDEAL HUSBAND (1947), TOM BROWN'S SCHOOLDAYS (1951) and THE FEMININE TOUCH and ISLAND IN THE SUN (both 1957). In the late 1950's she appeared on American television in "The Empress" on "Producers' Showcase" (1957) and in "The Second Man" on "Playhouse 90" (1959).
