Born in Manchester, England; attended Thornliegh Salesian College (Bolton, Lancashire). Boyle entered British television as a director and producer in 1987. His TV directing credits include 2 episodes of the "Inspector Morse" series (1990, 1992). Turning to feature films in 1995, his credits include SHALLOW GRAVE (1995), TRAINSPOTTING (1996), A LIFE LESS ORDINARY (1997), THE BEACH (2000), ALIEN LOVE TRIANGLE and 28 DAYS LATER... (also exec. prod.) (both 2002), MILLIONS (2004), SUNSHINE (2007), and SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE (2008).
