A significant contributor to the Italian neorealist movement, thanks to his work on films by Vittorio De Sica (SHOESHINE, 1946), Renato Castellani (UNDER THE SUN OF ROME, 1948) and, most notably, Roberto Rossellini. Of his seven collaborations with Rossellini, the neorealist classics PAISAN (1946) and OPEN CITY (1945), and the later GENERAL DELLA ROVERE (1959), stand out.
