Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Entered Canadian film composing the music for 1941's CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS. JOE (1945), NEW FACES COME BACK (1946), MÉTROPOLE and THE BOY WHO STOPPED NIAGARA (both 1947), BALLET FESTIVAL and LOST BOUNDARIES (both 1949), A FRIEND AT THE DOOR (1950), ROYAL JOURNEY and TERESA (both 1951), OPERATION A-BOMB (1952), ALL MY BABIES (1953), RICHES OF THE EARTH (1954), THE JOLIFOU INN (1955), CANADIAN PACIFIC and OEDIPUS REX (both 1957), WHEAT RUST (1958), WHEAT COUNTRY (1959), THE MASK (1961), PADDLE TO THE SEA and THE FOREST (both 1966), THE DISOVERERS (1972), TENNESSEE WILLIAMS' SOUTH (1973), HOMAGE TO CHAGALL: THE COLOURS OF LOVE (1977), and KARSH: THE SEARCHING EYE (1986). For television, he composed scores for "Arthur Miller on Home Ground" (1979) and "The Taming of the Shrew" (1988).
Applebaum was a companion of the Order of Canada, and his fanfares are played before every performance at the Stratford (Ontario) Shakespeare Festival.
