The Yearling (1946)
Born in Missouri, USA; educated at the New York School of Photography. Started as assistant cameraman for Fox in 1927, became second cameraman in 1931. He was camera operator on GONE WITH THE WIND (1939). After WW II, in which he served as a naval lieutenant commander, he returned to films as director of photography.

Notable credits include his first film, MERELY MARY ANN (1931), and THREE ON A HONEYMOON (1934), HERE COMES THE CAVALRY (1941), THE YEARLING (1946), CAPTAIN FROM CASTILE (1947), MOTHER IS A FRESHMAN (1949), WABASH AVENUE and MY BLUE HEAVEN (both 1950), MEET ME AFTER THE SHOW (1951), BELLES ON THEIR TOES (1952), THE FARMER TAKES A WIFE (1953), RED GARTERS (1954), LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME and I'LL CRY TOMORROW (both 1955), RANSOM! (1956), TAMMY AND THE BACHELOR (1957), FLOOD TIDE and THIS HAPPY FEELING (both 1958), TAKE A GIANT STEP and PILLOW TALK (both 1959), THE STORY OF RUTH (1960), LOVER COME BACK (1961), THE NOTORIOUS LANDLADY (1962), MY SIX LOVES (1963), STRAIT-JACKET and THE SECRET INVASION (both 1964), and ONCE BEFORE I DIE and SKI PARTY (both 1965).

Arling was director of photography for eight episodes of the "Peter Gunn" television series in 1958.
