Born in Indianapolis, IN. His easy-going embodiment of Uncle Remus made such an impression on 1947 audiences that he was honored with a special Oscar® at that year's ceremonies. Best known before SONG OF THE SOUTH as the fast-talking lawyer Gabby Gibson on radio's "Amos 'n' Andy" show, he died from a heart ailment only four months after receiving his Award.
Other notable film credits include HARLEM IS HEAVEN (1932), 20,000 CHEERS FOR THE CHAIN GANG (1933, uncredited), POLICY MAN (1938), STRAIGHT TO HEAVEN (1939), COMES MIDNIGHT (1940) and REVENGE OF THE ZOMBIES (1943).
