A former bank teller, she began writing articles and reviewing films for the NY Morning Telegraph, then, sometimes using the pen name Esther Evarts, contributed short stories to The New Yorker. Some of her most popular stories were collected into books, two of which, Junior Miss and Meet Me in St. Louis, became best sellers and were made into successful films. She began writing scripts directly for the screen in the early 1940s.
