Born in Illinois. Entered American film as director of photography for A REGULAR FELLOW (1925) at Famous Players-Lasky. Shot a number of silent films, including OLD IRONSIDES (1926) and TILLIE'S PUNCTURED ROMANCE (1928). Sound film credits (alone or in collaboration) include MEET THE FLEET (1940), CARNIVAL OF RHYTHM (1941), BEYOND THE BLUE HORIZON (1942), ANCHORS AWEIGH (1945), THE ROAD TO HOLLYWOOD (1946), FUN AND FANCY FREE (1947), SADDLE TRAMP (1950), TOMAHAWK, APACHE DRUMS, MARK OF THE RENEGADE and THE LADY FROM TEXAS (all 1951), STEEL TOWN (1952), CITY BENEATH THE SEA and GUNSMOKE (both 1953), DAVY CROCKETT, KING OF THE WILD FRONTIER (1954), WESTWARD HO THE WAGONS! (1956) and JOHNNY TREMAIN and his last film, OLD YELLER, (both 1957).
