John Bryan

Biography from Katz's Film Encyclopedia

He began deisgning stage sets at the age of 16. At 20 he entered films, beginning as draftsman and assistant art director on such noted British productions as THE GHOST GOES WEST and THINGS TO COME (both 1936). After becoming art director in the late 30s, he designed many important British films and was especially noted for his work on Shaw and Dickens adaptations. Later in his career, he was the production designer on BECKET (1964). In 1951 he became a producer, working in that capacity for various British production organizations until his death.
