A classic Tin Pan Alley lyricist from 1935, he supplied lyrics for many films, often working in collaboration with composers Jule Styne or Jimmy Van Heusen. Of 26 Academy Award nominations, he won four awards. He was known informally as Frank Sinatra's personal composer, having written over 80 songs recorded by Old Blue Eyes.
