As a screenwriter, mostly in collaboration, his credits include VARSITY STREET (1932), FORSAKING ALL OTHERS (1934, from his play), CORNET OVER BROADWAY (1938), RULERS OF THE SEA (1939), TOM BROWN'S SCHOOL DAYS and SECOND CHORUS (also ass't director) (both 1940), SYNCOPATION (1942), GOING MY WAY (1944), THE CORN IS GREEN (1945), SMASH-UP: THE STORY OF A WOMAN (1947), ACROSS THE WIDE MISSOURI (1951), and his last film, THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH (1952).
