Born in Washington, DC. Writer, story editor and producer who entered American film during the silent era with THE RAGGED EARL (1914). He worked as writer or title writer on 35 other silent features. Other notable writing credits after the advent of sound, alone or in collaboration, include RENO (1930), PLATINUM BLONDE (1931), THE BACK PAGE (1936), RAINBOW ON THE RIVER (1936), OUR TOWN (1940), SERGEANT YORK (1941), THE ADVENTURES OF MARK TWAIN and THREE IS A FAMILY (both 1944), THE JOLSON STORY (1946), and TALE OF THE NAVAJOS and TARZAN'S MAGIC FOUNTAIN (both 1949).
