Born in Stillwater, Minnesota. He worked in his family restaurant business before going to London, where he started his career as a film editor in 1936. He joined 20th Century-Fox, for whom he edited numerous films in the UK and the US through the late 50s. Becoming a director, he specialized in adventure and nature dramas meant mainly for children.
