Jack Cosgrove
(1902 - 1965)

Special effects photographer, considered one of the premiere matte painters in the history of special effect. Cosgrove entered American film as an uncredited effects cameraman for THE BLACK CAT (1934) at Universal. He remained at the studio as a matte painter for THE BLACK ROOM (1935) and returned to create the matte effects for TOWER OF LONDON (1939).

Cosgrove's special effects credits include THE GARDEN OF ALLAH (1936), A STAR IS BORN, THE PRISONER OF ZENDA and NOTHING SACRED (all 1937), THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER and THE YOUNG IN HEART (both 1938), MADE FOR EACH OTHER, INTERMIZZO: A LOVE STORY and GONE WITH THE WIND (all 1939), REBECCA, BEYOND TOMORROW, OUR TOWN, KIT CARSON and THE GREAT DICTATOR (uncredited) (all 1940), SO ENDS OUR NIGHT, MEET JOHN DOE and POWER DIVE (all 1941), THE PRIDE OF THE YANKEES (1942), ACTION IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC and THIS IS THE ARMY (both 1943), PASSAGE TO MARSEILLE and SINCE YOU WENT AWAY (both 1944), SPELLBOUND (1945), DUEL IN THE SUN (1946), JOAN OF ARC (1948), SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON (1949), DRUMS IN THE DEEP SOUTH and FLIGHT TO MARS (both 1951), MUTINY (1952), INVADERS FROM MARS (1953), THE RESTLESS BREED (1958), and his last film, SEPTEMBER STORM (1960).
