Born Winifred Ashton in Blackheath, Kent, England. English novelist and playwright. She was an artist, teacher, and actress before she turned to writing. Her first novel, A Regiment of Women (1917), is a compelling study of the hothouse emotional life in a girls' school. Legend (1919), concerns a young girl who devotes her life to her deranged father; Dane made it into a play called Bill of Divorcement (1921), which starred Katherine Cornell. Dane wrote many other novels and plays.
Dane's screenwriting credits (alone or in collaboration) include ANNA KARENINA (1935), THE AMATEUR GENTLEMAN (1936), FIRE OVER ENGLAND and FAREWELL AGAIN (both 1937), SIDEWALKS OF LONDON (1938), SALUTE JOHN CITIZEN (1942), PERFECT STRANGERS (1945), BONNIE PRINCE CHARLIE (1948), BRIDE OF VENGEANCE (1949) and THE ANGEL WITH THE TRUMPET (1950). Bill of Divorcement was adpated to the screen in 1922, 1932 and 1940.
