Born in St. Paul, MN. A former vaudeville, carnival, and stock performer and a professional boxer, he made his screen debut in 1926's WHEN THE WIFE'S AWAY and played well over 100 character parts, often cunning but kind, in a wide variety of films. He was nominated for an Oscar® for his role in THE JOLSON STORY (1946). Familiar to TV viewers as Uncle Charley in the long-running series "My Three Sons."
