John S. Detlie
(1908 - 2005)

Born in Sioux Falls, SD; educated at the University of Pennsylvania. Associate art director in the 1930s and 40s whose credits include MAMA STEPS OUT, A FAMILY AFFAIR and SARATOGA (all 1937), EVERYBODY SING, HOLD THAT KISS, THREE LOVES HAS NANCY, A CHRISTMAS CAROL and TEST PILOT (art director) (all 1938), LUCKY NIGHT, ON BORROWED TIME, ANOTHER THIN MAN and BROADWAY MELODY OF 1940 (art director) (all 1939), EDISON, THE MAN, STRIKE UP THE BAND and BITTER SWEET (all 1940), ANDY HARDY'S PRIVATE SECRETARY, THE BAD MAN, LADY BE GOOD and THE CHOCOLATE SOLDIER (all 1941), I MARRIED AN ANGEL, CROSSROADS, THE WAR AGAINST MRS. HADLEY and PANAMA HATTIE (all 1942).

Detlie went on to serve in the Army in World War II, including directing the camouflage of the Boeing plant in Seattle. He then pursued a career in architecture, designing a number of large churches and parts of downtown Honolulu. He was also an accomplished artist, in water colors, acrylics and oils. His brother, Stanley Detlie was a recognized props master from the 1930s until the 1960s.

He was briefly married to actress Veronica Lake (1940-43). In 1946, he married his wife Virginia, and they remained married until his death from lung cancer in 2005.
