Born in Dublin, Ireland. Classic beauty from the Dublin stage who had appeared in several British films before making her Broadway debut in the 1938 Mercury Theater production of Heartbreak House and her Hollywood debut in DARK VICTORY (1939). Perhaps best remembered for her Oscar®-nominated performance in WUTHERING HEIGHTS (1939), Fitzgerald played strongwilled women throughout the 40s but, after being put on suspension for protesting her studio-chosen roles, found her career at a virtual standstill by the end of the decade.
In the 1970s she made a triumphant return to the stage as an actress (Long Day's Journey Into Night 1971), director (Mass Appeal 1980) and street performer (with her own Everyman Street Theatre, founded in 1968). Son is director Michael Lindsay-Hogg.
