William Hanna

Biography from Katz's Film Encyclopedia

Born in Melrose, New Mexico. At 20 he joined the story department of the Harman-Isling studios, where he worked for seven years as a story editor, lyricist and composer. In 1937 he moved over to MGM, where he collaborated with Joseph Barbera and producer Fred Quimby in creating the cartoon characters of Tom and Jerry. He and Barbera produced more than 100 cartoons for MGM, then set up their own production company, Hanna-Barbera in 1957.
