Born in New York City, the daughter of Theodor Holm, a Norwegian insurance adjuster for Loyd's of London, and Jean Parke Holm, an American portrait artist and author; studied acting at the University of Chicago. Successful stage actress who signed a longterm contract with 20th Century-Fox and made her screen debut with THREE LITTLE GIRLS IN BLUE in 1946. Holm earned critical acclaim for her third film, GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT (1947), and proved her versatility in a number of leading and supporting roles through the 1970s.

Appearing extensively in television from 1953, her feature film credits also include CARNIVAL IN COSTA RICA (1947), ROAD HOUSE and THE SNAKE PIT (both 1948), CHICKEN EVERY SUNDAY, A LETTER TO THREE WIVES (uncredited voice of Addie Ross), COME TO THE STABLE and EVERYBODY DOES IT (all 1949), CHAMPAGNE FOR CAESAR and ALL ABOUT EVE (both 1950), THE TENDER TRAP (1955), HIGH SOCIETY (1956), BACHELOR FLAT (1962), DOCTOR, YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING (1967), TOM SAWYER (1973), BITTERSWEET LOVE (1976), THE PRIVATE FILES OF J. EDGAR HOOVER (1977), 3 MEN AND A BABY (1987), STILL BREATHING (1997), and ALCHEMY (2005).

Holm originated the role of boy-crazy Ado Annie, the girl who "cain't say no", in Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! on Broadway in 1943. It was reported that she turned down the 1979 Broadway revival of the show when she realized she was wanted for Aunt Eller and not Ado Annie.

In 1957, King Olav V of Norway made her Knight 1st Class of the Order of St. Olav for her help in saving one of Norway's national treasures, the schooner "Christian Radich." She was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame in 1992. In April 2006, Holm was presented with one of the first two Lifetime Achievement Awards ever awarded by the SunDeis Film Festival at Brandeis University. (Margaret O'Brien received the other.) She tours occasionally with her one person show, An Intimate Evening with Celeste where she relates stories from her long film career, followed by readings from writer Ruth Draper.
