George James Hopkins
(1896 - 1985)

Born in Pasadena, CA. Set decorator (and production manager, production designer, costume designer and art director in the silent era) who began his career working with Theda Bara (CLEOPATRA, 1917; SALOME and THE SHE DEVIL, both 1918; A WOMAN THERE WAS, 1919), with whom he remained close friends. After a stint as a writer in the 1920s, he began his career as a set decorator at Warner's in 1940 with A DISPATCH FROM REUTERS and worked there until 1967. Notable credits, alone or in collaboration, include CASABLANCA (1942), MISSION TO MOSCOW, THIS IS THE ARMY and PASSAGE TO MARSEILLE (all 1943), JANIE (1944), MILDRED PIERCE (1945), SUSPENSE and OF HUMAN BONDAGE (both 1946), LIFE WITH FATHER (1947), TASK FORCE (1949), DALLAS (1950), STRANGERS ON A TRAIN and A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE (both 1951), THE STORY OF WILL ROGERS (1952), I CONFESS and SO BIG (both 1953), DIAL M FOR MURDER and A STAR IS BORN (both 1954), EAST OF EDEN (1955), AUNTIE MAME (1958), THE DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS and SUNRISE AT CAMPOBELLO (both 1960), PORTRAIT OF A MOBSTER (1961), THE MUSIC MAN, THE CHAPMAN REPORT and DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES (all 1962), RAMPAGE (1963), MY FAIR LADY (1964), NONE BUT THE BRAVE, THE GREAT RACE and INSIDE DAISY CLOVER (all 1965), WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOLFF? (1966), HOTEL and WAIT UNTIL DARK (both 1967). Moving to Fox, Hopkins shared an Academy Award for HELLO, DOLLY! (1969). His later credits include THE CHEYENNE SOCIAL CLUB, ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER and R.P.M. (all 1970), THE LOVE MACHINE (1971), 1776 and DIRTY LITTLE BILLY (both 1972), 40 CARATS (1973), and his last film, THE DAY OF THE LOCUST at Paramount in 1975.

Hopkins claimed to have been the lover of William Desmond Taylor during or before the time of Taylor's famous unsolved murder.
