Black Narcissus (1947)
Born in Görlitz, Silesia, Germany. He designed sets for the Berlin State Opera and State Theater before joining UFA studios as an art director in 1920. Toward the end of the decade he began working for E.A. Dupont in Britain and eventually settled there. His creative décor contributed greatly to the success of many British films, particularly those of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger in the 1940s. From the late 40s till the late 50s he was head of the art department of MGM's British studios.
