A film actor from 1913 and a director from 1915, King established himself as one of the great artists of the silent period with TOL'ABLE DAVID (1921), a poignant evocation of rural Americana. With Fox from 1930 to 1961, King proved himself one of Hollywood's most prolific and consistently commercial directors, though his sound films have generally drawn less critical praise than his early work. King's nostalgia for the America of boundless prairies and visionary pioneers resurfaced in numerous films, including IN OLD CHICAGO (1938) and JESSE JAMES (1939). Some of his other notable credits include STATE FAIR (1933), LLOYD'S OF LONDON (1936), ALEXANDER'S RAGTIME BAND (1938), STANLEY AND LIVINGSTONE (1939), A YANK IN THE R.A.F. (1941), THE BLACK SWAN (1942), THE SONG OF BERNADETTE, WILSON (1944), A BELL FOR ADANO (1945), MARGIE (1946), CAPTAIN FROM CASTILE (1947), PRINCE OF FOXES and TWELVE O'CLOCK HIGH (both 1949), THE GUNFIGHTER (1950), DAVID AND BATHSHEBA (1951), THE SNOWS OF KILIMANJARO (1952), KING OF THE KHYBER RIFLES (1953), UNTAMED and LOVE IS A MANY-SPLENDORED THING (both 1955), CAROUSEL (1956), THE SUN ALSO RISES (1957), THIS EARTH IS MINE and BELOVED INFIDEL (both 1959) and his last film, TENDER IS THE NIGHT (1962).
King was one of the 36 founders of the Academy. He died from a heart attack during his sleep in Toluca Lake, CA, in 1982. His brother was director Louis King (1898-1962).
