Born in Pittsburgh, PA. An editor since the late 1930s, he directed a couple of documentaries in the early 40s and flirted briefly with directing features in the early 50s but soon returned to editing. Besides his Oscar-nominated films, he edited such features as I'LL CRY TOMORROW (1955), THE TEAHOUSE OF THE AUGUST MOON (1956), SILK STOCKINGS (1957), and supervised the editing on THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD (1965).
