Born in New York City. A former reporter, Kurnitz arrived in Hollywood in 1938 after being hired to write the screenplay for his own story, "Fast Company." He stayed to become a prolific screenwriter, working on everything from Errol Flynn swashbucklers to Danny Kaye comedies. He also found time to become a successful novelist and playwright (A Shot in the Dark, Once More with Feeling). Kurnitz as nominated for Broadway's 1964 Tony Award as Best Author (Musical), along with his collaborator Noël Coward, for The Girl Who Came to Supper.

Kurnitz's writing credits, alone or in collaboration, include SHADOW OF THE THIN MAN (1941), PACIFIC RENDEZVOUS (also producer) and SHIP AHOY (uncredited) (both 1942), THE THIN MAN GOES HOME (1944), THE WEB (1947), ONE TOUCH OF VENUS and ADVENTURES OF DON JUAN (both 1948),THE INSPECTOR GENERAL (1949), PRETTY BABY (1950, also producer), OF MEN AN MUSIC (1951), TONIGHT WE SING (1953), LAND OF THE PHARAOHS (1955), THE HAPPY ROAD (1957), WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION (1957), ONCE MORE, WITH FEELING! (1960), HATARI! (1962), GOODBYE CHARLIE (1964), and HOW TO STEAL A MILLION (1966). He also wrote a few episodes for television, beginning in 1955.
