Stage-trained actress whose early screen career was marked by a string of unsympathetic portraits, beginning with her acclaimed debut in GASLIGHT (1944); Lansbury was also memorable as Laurence Harvey's manipulative mother in THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (1962). Most of her subsequent work has been for stage and TV, most notably Tony Award-winning roles in Mame, Dear World, Gypsy and Sweeney Todd, and the long-running TV series "Murder, She Wrote."
