Born in Connecticut, USA. Brother of composers Alfred Newman and Lionel Newman. Musical director (1940-1962) for almost 170 films. Composed scores for some 30 films and television series, including A SONG IS BORN (1948, uncredited), RANCHO NOTORIOUS and BIG JIM McLAIN (both 1952), ISLAND IN THE SKY (1953), BEACHHEAD and SOUTHWEST PASSAGE (both 1954), THE NAKED STREET (1955), SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD (1956), CHICAGO CONFIDENTIAL (1957), UNWED MOTHER (1958), RIOT IN JUVENILE PRISON (1959) and THE GREAT SIOUX MASSACRE (1965).
