Born in St. Louis, MO. Capable, good-looking leading lady, second lead, and character player of stage and screen. The product of a socially prominent New England family, she began appearing on Broadway in 1930 and in Hollywood films in 1937. Memorable as Scarlett O'Hara's mother in GONE WITH THE WIND (1939) and for her Oscar®-nominated performance as best supporting actress in ALL THIS, AND HEAVEN TOO (1940). She was briefly married to playwright-director Joshua Logan.
