Born John Patrick Goggin in Louisville, KY. The author of such plays as The Hasty Heart and the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Teahouse of the August Moon, he also wrote numerous Hollywood screenplays, alone or in collaboration, from the mid-1930s through the late 60s, including EDUCATING FATHER (1936), BORN RECKLESS (1937), MR. MOTO TAKES A CHANCE (1938), THE STRANGE LOVE OF MARTHA IVERS (1946), FRAMED (1947), ENCHANTMENT (1948), THE PRESIDENT'S LADY (1953), THREE COINS IN THE FOUNTAIN (1954), LOVE IS A MANY-SPLENDORED THING (1955), HIGH SOCIETY and THE TEAHOUSE OF THE AUGUST MOON (both 1956), LES GIRLS (1957), SOME CAME RUNNING (1958), THE WORLD OF SUZIE WONG (1960), GIGOT (1962), and his last feature film, THE SHOES OF THE FISHERMAN (1968). The Hasty Heart was adapted to the big screen in 1949 and had several other adaptations for television.

On 7 November 1995, he was found dead in his room with a plastic bag over his head. His death was ruled a suicide.
