Born in Paris, France. One of the world's most distinguished lighting cameramen, he contributed much to early sound cinema in Europe. In French films from 1913, he began gaining recognition in the mid 1920s when he collaborated on the short films of Jean Grémillon, then solidified his reputation in the early 30s with the films of René Clair. In 1933 he was lured away to London by Alexander Korda. He subsequently photographed many prestigious British films, winning an Academy Award for the rich color photography of THE THIEF OF BAGDAD (1940).
