Born in San Francisco, CA. Character star of Hollywood films after extensive work on the stage from age 12. In the 1910s and 20s, when she starred on Broadway, she was noted for her beauty and grace. She also appeared in several silent films, but by the time she made Hollywood her home in the 1930s, she was a middle-aged woman pegged for character roles, typically as blowsy aging harlots and fallen women. She played some leads but appeared mainly in supporting roles, some them memorable. Her first of three husbands was actor-playwright-screenwriter Willard Mack.
