Born in Terre Haute, IN. Art director who entered American film with Henry Hathaway's BRIGHAM YOUNG at 20th Century-Fox in 1940. Other notable credits, alone or in collaboration, include THE PIED PIPER (1942), LIFEBOAT (1944), CAPTAIN EDDIE and LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN (both 1945), SOMEWHERE IN THE NIGHT (1946), 13 RUE MADELEINE and THE FOXES OF HARROW (both 1947), THE WALLS OF JERICHO (1948), MOTHER IS A FRESHMAN and TWELVE O'CLOCK HIGH (both 1949), PANIC IN THE STREETS (1950), THE DESERT FOX (1951), DREAMBOAT (1952), NIAGARA and TITANIC (both 1953), BROKEN LANCE (1954), A MAN CALLED PETER (1955), LOVE ME TENDER (1956), DESK SET (1957), THE LONG, HOT SUMMER (1958), BELOVED INFIDEL (1959), FROM THE TERRACE (1960), and his last films, SNOW WHITE AND THE THREE STOOGES and MISTY (both 1961).
