Richard Rodgers

Born in New York City. America's most successful creator of show music for both stage and films, at first in collaboration with lyricist Lorenz Hart and from 1943 with Oscar Hammerstein II. His first song was produced on stage when he was 17 and his first Broadway musical when he was 18. He also produced many of his own musicals and after Hammerstein's death wrote some of his own lyrics. He made a personal appearance in the film MAIN STREET TO BROADWAY (1953). The film WORDS AND MUSIC (1948) told the story of his association with Hart, with Tom Drake as Rodgers and Mickey Rooney as Hart.
