Born in Brooklyn, NY. A former schoolteacher and lawyer, he began composing for Broadway in the late 1920s, often collaborating with lyricist Howard Dietz. After 1930 he also scored and wrote songs for films. Some notable songs penned by Schwartz include "Dancing in the Dark", "You and the Night and the Music", "All Through the Night", "Something to Remember You By", "Thank Your Lucky Stars", "They're Either Too Young or Too Old", "A Rainy Night in Rio", "A Girl in Calico", "By Myself", and "I Guess I'll Have to Change My Plan." Schwartz also produced COVER GIRL (1944) and NIGHT AND DAY (1946).
