Fred Sersen
(1890 - 1962)

Born in Czechoslovakia. He set up the trick photography for many 20th Century-Fox films of the late 1930s, 40s, and early 50s, and was appointed head of Fox's special-effects department. The giant tank at the Fox studios was named after him because of his expertise at staging exciting ocean scenes on the lot.

He worked on the special effects for over 225 films. MUIR, KISS OF DEATH, GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT and THE FOXES OF HARROW (all 1947), CALL NORTHSIDE 777, SITTING PRETTY and THE SNAKE PIT (all 1948), A LETTER TO THREE WIVES, IT HAPPENS EVERY SPRING, COME TO THE STABLE, PINKY, PRINCE OF FOXES and TWELVE O'CLOCK HIGH (all 1949), WABASH AVENUE, PANIC IN THE STREETS, BROKEN ARROW and ALL ABOUT EVE (all 1950), RAWHIDE, ON THE RIVIERA, THE HOUSE ON TELEGRAPH HILL, THE FROGMEN, DAVID AND BATHSHEBA, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL and THE DESERT FOX (all 1951), and VIVA ZAPATA!, 5 FINGERS, WITH A SONG IN MY HEART, THE PRIDE OF ST. LOUIS and LYDIA (all 1952), and DOWN AMONG THE SHELTERING PALMS and his last film, THE FARMER TAKES A WIFE (both 1953).
