Irwin Shaw

Born Irwin Gilbert Shamforoff in New York City. He began as a radio dramatist, adapting episodes for "Dick Tracy" and other popular shows. He saw his first play and screenplay produced in 1936 and his first collection of short stories published in 1940. But it wasn't until the publication of his best-selling WW II novel, The Young Lions, in 1948 that he became successful and famous as an author. He continued to write for the screen, and several films were adapted from his fiction.
